QUARTER-FINALS AT SIGHT

During this week we have watched the best and the worst of the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010.

The round of 16 has relegated teams which power and tradition in football hasn't reached the level of contenders to the championship.

Teams like Mexico, South Korea, Slovakia, Japan, USA, England, Portugal and Chile showed that it is needed something else but, hiring expensive coaches, having players in the best clubs of the world or managing the best organized leagues.

They were not bad teams, but in a World Cup, it is not enough being a "good" team, it is required to be extrordinary in many aspects of the game.

Some fans would like to blame referees (whose performace was really bad) of their teams elimination. However, it was the lack of ideas, technic, even character, what made them vanish in front of the doors of the next stage.

The good news are that great games will be played in the quarter-finals. Let's check:

Argentina vs Germany (they played two World Cup Finals in 1986 and 1990), Brazil vs Netherlands (they have played in quarter ans semifinals many times, 1998, 2002), Spain vs Paraguay (Spain is looking for semifinal for first time since 1962) Uruguay vs Ghana (Uruguay want to tie what they did in 1970).

So, get ready, because it's SHOWTIME

Health and World Cup

During the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010, millions of condoms were given to the people of that country, because of the AIDS (HIV) rate, which has increased amazingly since the 1980's.

Suppositions

There are some facts in the World Cup, that maybe are not very good for all fans, but let's enter to the expeculation's field.

Surprise!!

Few hours ago, one of the biggest surprises of the World Cup was accomplished. Italy the current champion was defeated in great match by Slovakia.

The king is dead, long life to the King!! Italy played the best match in the Cup, but it wasn't enough to defeat a very well organized team.

On the other hand Japan achieved to eliminate Cameroon, and qualified secondly, behind Holland.

Nippons are going to play vs Paraguay, who showed great power in defense and contundency in attack. Meanwhile Holland (with perfect record) will face the amazing Slovakia, in other sections of the draw in the FIFA World Cup.

The real World Cup is about to begin

Today started the final round of the World Cup's first phase. The matches were and will be played at the same time in order to avoid expeculations of arranged games.

Uruguay with no defeats and Mexico are the qualified in the group A, meanwhile Argentina with a perfect record and South Korea classified for group B.

The South American teams are clearly favorites in their next matches, and Mexico with Korea have been labeled as VICTIMS prevously.

However, every single game must be played and perhaps Mexico will have another epic fight just like in 2006 World Cup, when it was eliminated by Argentina in overtime thanks to an extraodinary goal by Maxi Rodriguez.

Koreans can not be subestimated, just remember that in 2002 they achived unusual heights "defeating" Spain and Italy. So, I guess there won't be such easy games.

Real football is about to start in the view will be clear when the other groups define their situation during the next days.

World Cup

Brazilians are considered real Football artists.

The UEFA Champions League is the best football Clubs Tournament all over the world.

The greatest games are played by the most powerful European teams. Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Internazzionale Milano, AC Milan, Olympique Lyonnais, Paris Saint-Germain, PSV, Ajax are some of contenders every year.

Football and Society

Football was officially invented by English people in the 19th Century, but actually its is played all over the globe. In fact, FIFA (International Fedaration of Associated Football by their French meaning) has more members than the United Nations distributed in 6 Confederations: UEFA, CONMEBOL, CAF, AFC, CONCACAF and OFA.

Football can unite or divide neighborhoods, cities, and even countries. Some of the strongest rivalries are among same region teams. For example River Plate vs Boca Jrs in Argentina. .

There are football rivalries that imply religious, political or ethnic differences, which give the game an extra passion dosis. So, every single match has much more meaning than a simple sport. "Classics or Derbies" such as Rangers vs Celtic (Catholics vs Protestants), Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona (capital vs province), Chivas vs America, are expected games in each country with millions of fans that fullfill stadiums and pay millions in team jerseys, scarfs, and tickets in order to support a modern and "pacific" war.

But football can also achieve unity and identity in the countries, the best prove of that is the World Cup and the Confedaration's Cups, where nations forget their internal differences to get a common objective: the championship.

Football and education

Football (soccer) as Americans say is one of the most popular sports worldwide.

It has many ancestors, such as "Calcio" in Italy or "Juego de pelota" in Mexico. But English were the ones who first created the game as it is known until our days.

Football is not only a sport, it includes many principles of different areas of science, like Physics, Geometry, Biology, Chemestry, etc. It also involves a variety of art expressions, such as Scuplture, Painting, Music and Filming industry.

Football provides indeed many values: team work, solidarity, effort, dignity, pride, and much more which can be closely related to attitudes promoted in schools since centuries ago.

Many people, but mostly the young ones might have considered football as "the easy way" to get a successful life, however football's culture is much bigger and harder than it looks.

School must find a closer relationship with football so it can become a useful tool in the search of meaningful learning, specially for students which cultural background is mainly football.
